Filing for asylum is a long and difficult process. Often times you are in the United States alone without family members. This can be a scary situation to find yourself in. On the one hand, you are alone, but on the other, it is not safe for you to return back to your home country. The good news is that once you are granted asylum, you can petition to bring your family members (spouse and children as long as they are unmarried and under the age of 21) to the United States. It is important to note that there is a time limit to file this petition. It must be done within the first 2 years of being granted asylum status.
