What You Need to Know Before Applying for a Student Visa

The United States has some of the best Universities in the world. From its' Ivy League schools (Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, etc.) to it's public Universities (N.Y. University, UCLA, University of Florida), there are many many Universities that a person can attend and gain an education that is respected worldwide.  If you are thinking of coming to the United States to attend a University and further your education, here are a few things you should know.

First, although travel to the United States has become restricted in some areas of the world, people coming to study in the US is still the second most popular reason for people to come to the USA. Second only to people coming for tourism. The student visa is a very attractive visa to many people and may be something you wish to apply for. This is because of how many great Universities the United State has. If you obtain a degree from a US University, when you go anywhere around the world you can proudly state you graduated from a US University. You may use a student visa to study in the USA to obtain your bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or even your PhD.

The process may vary depending on where you are coming from, but usually you must have a US University in mind that you wish to apply to. Hopefully you are accepted into the US University. Once you are accepted, you will be asked with completing the appropriate forms and paperwork and provide specific evidence that they will need from you. It's a little more complicated than that, but this is just a quick breakdown of what to expect. You may be required to do a few other things so it may be a good idea before you begin this process to seek the advice and guidance of an experienced and knowledgeable immigration attorney.

Let's just assume you went through the first step without any complications. What next? Well now you will have to pay the initial fees that are associated with the student visa (every visa application has fees you need to pay so a student visa is no different).

Hopefully the first two steps went smoothly and did not take too long (or exceedingly longer than what is normal). Now you will have to schedule an interview to see if you will be granted your visa. This is the most stressful part of any visa since you will be interviewed by an immigration officer at a US embassy. Different visas and embassies have different wait times so if you are at this step, make sure you find a US embassy that has an available interview time and date you want.

What should you expect at the Embassy interview? Any document you provided throughout this process the officer will have a copy of and may ask you questions or ask you to clarify certain things. Before the interview, you may also be asked to bring additional documents. This is not rare so don't panic. Just remember to answer truthfully any questions that are asked of you during the interview process.

If everything goes well and you are granted your student visa, then congratulations. Make sure you attend your classes and keep your grades up, but also enjoy everything that the USA has to offer. Also, know what restrictions come with your visa so you don't get in trouble with immigration.
