What is the Oath of Allegiance?

Every year thousands of Green Card Holders apply in order to become a US Citizen. The application process is detailed and needs a lot of accurate attention. Although an experienced ; strategic lawyer would make the process easier the overall process has become harder as the year passes.

In a recent citizenship case, which was denied previously under care of another lawyer, our law office believed to have coordinated a full complete package with all past and present issues covered, all government questions explained and every single required document submitted.

Ms. Ramona Kennedy, attorney of the record walks into a room with her client; thinking this is the end of a long year battle.

The Client speaks good English but in no way is prepared to argue philosophical aspects behind the most important concept of a US CITIZENSHIP—Oath of Allegiance.

After initial introduction & identity verification procedure, the respected federal officer asks: So this is a Citizenship Interview. What does the oath of Allegiance mean to you? Client describes the oath and says part of it is obeying a law and being a good citizen.

Then she is asked: “What does obeying the US laws mean to you?”. She then answers it means obeying all the US Laws at all levels and at all times.

But the answer is not satisfactory. She is told, if she doesn't explain the concept well enough, although she has a completed file, she will be denied US Citizenship.

At this point client is shaking. She starts to answer yes to start explaining the concept; still she is not good enough.

The respected officer at this point appears to be a bit agitated. She is trying to help the Client understand the concept. After few back and forth; federal officer says “ what countries allegiance you should leave today? “

And miracle happens; my Client says the name of her birth country—federal officer sits back with a smile. I breathe.
My Client then promises to bear arms and work in the front line or as of a support civilian group to defend US if necessary.
So a perfect file had a ONE interview Question and the most important one—The Oath.

And the first part of the oath of allegiance is denouncing prior loyalties: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen…”

Although the requirement to take the Oath of Allegiance of the United States is waived for children under 14 years of age at the time of naturalization; one can not become a US Citizen without promising the firm loyalty to the United States of America.
