US Visa for Athletes, Artists, and Entertainers

The P visa is a non-immigrant entertainment visa with various classifications for athletes, artists, and entertainers. This visa allows these specific foreign nationals to reside in the United States for a competition, performance, or event that must be completed. Competing at an internationally recognized level is what makes an individual eligible to apply for the P-1 visa.


· P-1 Visa Requirements


o Applicant must be an internationally recognized athlete or entertainers

o Applicant must provide proof of contacts with various organizations or U.S. sporting leagues

o Must provide proof of at least two of the following:

-proof of major sports league participation in the U.S. in past seasons or major league season participation

-proof of competitions internationally with national team -written statement from an expert or sports media


· P-1 Visa Duration of Stay in US


o Up to five years

o Extensions may be granted

o Must not exceed a total stay of ten years


· P-1 Visa Advantages


o Apply for adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States

o Apply for visas for dependents

o Unrestricted travel

o Perform activities and gain money prize or form of payment

o Study part time


· P-2 Visa Requirements


o Applicant(s) must be an entertainer or artist, individually or as a collective group

o Exchange program which entails of an organization abroad and an organization within the US which allows for temporary exchange

o Proof of skills that qualify an individual as an entertainer or artist, must be highly experienced within their field

o Reciprocal exchange agreements completed by labor organization


· P-2 Visa Duration of Stay in US


o Maximum of one years

o Extensions may be granted


· P-2 Visa Advantages


o Unrestricted travel

o Engage in part time study

o Must not work

o Apply for adjustment of status to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States

o Spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 years old are allowed to enter the US under separate visa

o P-2 visa holder dependents are allowed to study full-time under separate visa


· P-3 Visa Requirements


o Applicant(s) must be an entertainer or artist, individually or as a collective group

o Must enter the US with the intent to teach, coach, or represent a specific unique performance or presentation that pertains to music, art, culture, etc.

o Must qualify as an entertainer or artist o Must be at least 18 years of age

o Must be able to eloquently communicate

o Must not have resided within the US the year prior to arrival under the P-3 visa


· P-3 Visa Duration of Stay in US


o Maximum of one years

o Extensions may be granted


· P-3 Visa Advantages


o Engage in part time study

o Apply for visas for dependents

o Apply for visas for support personnel

o Perform activities and gain money prize or form of payment


· P-4 Visa Requirements


o Must be the spouse of child of a P-1, P-2, or P-3 visa holder


· P-4 Duration of Stay in US


o May reside for as long as the P-1, P-2, or P-3 holder is residing in the US


· P-4 Visa Advantages / Disadvantages


o Permitted to engage in full time study

o May change status after entering the US

o No longer eligible as a P-4 dependent once a child turns 21 years old

o Must not work, must obtain a work visa prior
