What are Interpol Red Notices?

  • What is INTERPOL Red Notice?

According to INTERPOL, the main purpose of a Red Notice is to ““seek the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.”

A Red Notice may sometimes be known as an international arrest warrant, however INTERPOL itself has denied this possibility considering that the main purpose of a Red Notice is to inform other relevant member countries that one party is wanted based on an arrest warrant. There may also be a judicial decision issued by a particular country. Red Notices must meet a penalty threshold and are involve serious law crimes.

  • What are the Issues with Red Notices?

Interpol must review any and all requests. There are certain regulations that must be complied with before publications are ensured. With lack of knowledge and scrutiny, member states can abuse the system of Red Notices for their own personal benefit.

  • How to Challenge a Red Notice
  1. Full Representation Requesting for Deletion

In some cases, an individual may not have any warning to knowledge in regard to the intentions of the member state taking advantage, up until the Red Notice has already been publishes. In cases like these, a request for deletion may be completed and submitted to CCF. They may be supported by proof such as country reports or expert reports on the case.

  1. Pre-Emptive Letter

Often times, individuals who know that another person will be requesting a publication of a Red Notice. In cases like these, a pre-emptive letter may be sent out to Interpol ahead of time. In this request, contact with the state and reasons as to why a publication of Red Notice violates Interpol's' regulations and rules must be stated.
