Are you allowed to work as an Asylee in the US? The short answer is yes. If you apply for asylum in the US and are granted asylum status you are allowed to work. You can also be granted a social security card when you are granted Asylum. However, sometimes it takes a long time before you are even granted a decision on your application. If you have waited over 150 days and have not received a decision, you can apply for a Work Permit. You are not eligible to receive it until after 180 days, but incase your application takes a long time to reach a decision, having a work permit will allow you to work legally in the US until the decision is made.
